St. Lucia – 2021

SINCE THE DAYS when the Vikings were Christianized, Saint Lucia has been a favorite Christmas tradition among the Swedish families. She was a Sicilian saint, but the Swedes eagerly adopted her. According to legend, Lucia was a medieval saint who carried food and drink to hungry folk during a period of famine. Early in the morning, the modern Lucia, traditionally the oldest daughter of the family carries a tray of special buns and cookies to each one in the family as she sings the lovely old melody, “Santa Lucia.” Lucia wears a white robe with a crimson sash. On her head, she wears a crown of lighted candles, which dispels the blackness of the season of long nights. First Lutheran was visited by Saint Lucia during the worship service, December 12, 2021
